Harvest Moon Festival & Kangetsu Matsuri (September)

During the Harvest Moon, Kyoto hosts Kangetsu Matsuri, where visitors gather at temples and shrines to admire the moon in an elegant and time-honoured tradition.

Kyoto International Manga and Anime Fair

Known as “KyoMafu,” this is one of the largest manga, anime, and game events in western Japan, and has been held every September since 2012, attracting many manga and anime fans and creating a great deal of excitement.
 

Jidai Matsuri (22 October)

One of Kyoto’s three great festivals, the Jidai Matsuri features a 4.6 km procession of 2,000 participants dressed in historical attire, recreating Kyoto’s history from the Heian to Meiji eras. The parade starts at the Kyoto Imperial Palace and ends at Heian Shrine.  Photo courtesy of 京都写真

Night-viewing and Light-up in Autumn

Many temples, shrines, and areas will be open for nighttime viewing and illumination during the fall foliage season. Visitors can enjoy a fantastic autumn night stroll, which is different from daytime strolls.

Chion-ji Autumn Used Book Festival

Fire Festival

A traditional late-autumn event dating back to the Edo period, this festival takes place in November at shrines and temples in Kyoto. It is a solemn ritual in which fire is lit before the gods to pray for a good harvest and good health.
