Discover Otaru from the Water: A New Way to Explore the City!
Summers in Otaru remain relatively cool compared to southern regions of Japan, though recent years have brought an increasing number of warmer days. During this season, sightseeing by boat offers a refreshing and unique way to experience the city.
The view of Otaru from the water provides a striking contrast to the familiar sights of canals, warehouses, and sloping streets seen from land. Below are several recommended ways to enjoy Otaru from the sea.
◆ Cruise the Iconic Otaru Canal
Otaru Canal is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. While strolling along its banks and enjoying the historic warehouses and local cuisine remains a popular activity, canal cruises have recently gained attention as an alternative way to explore the area.
The Otaru Canal Cruise offers a 40-minute ride through the canal, accompanied by guided commentary on the city's history. The reclaimed canal features calm waters with minimal current, making for a smooth experience—even for those sensitive to motion.
Both daytime and evening cruises are available. When time allows, taking the cruise at different times of day offers varied and memorable views.

◆ Traditional Japanese Charm: The Yakatabune Boat Cruise
The Yakatabune, a traditional Japanese-style pleasure boat, represents an iconic form of sightseeing. Among Hokkaido's cities, such cruises are only available in Otaru.
Operating mainly on weekends and holidays, the Yakatabune cruises leisurely through Otaru Port over approximately 40 minutes. Private charters are also available, with flexible options such as bringing personal food and drinks or choosing plans with meals provided. These cruises are ideal for group outings or special gatherings.
A cruise while savoring seasonal cuisine and enjoying the ocean breeze offers a delightful way to spend time in Otaru.
